Keep things moving, naturally.

Want to keep things moving along? Did you know psyllium husk is the outer coating of Plantago ovata seeds, and one of the richest natural sources of soluble fibre? It may help support regularity.

Psyllium Husk comes in a pack of 60 Count.

Psyllium husk is the outer coating of the seeds of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in India. It is one of the richest natural sources of soluble fibre. When mixed with water, it swells into a soft, gel-like mass that helps keep things moving through the gut. Psyllium is a traditional favourite for regularity and is also a handy way to lift daily fibre when meals are short on wholegrains, fruit and vegetables.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Psyllium husk is about 70 per cent soluble fibre, made mostly of arabinoxylan, a branched polysaccharide. Unlike many fibres, it is not rapidly fermented by gut bacteria. It remains largely intact through the digestive tract, which is why it forms a persistent viscous gel when mixed with water.

This gel does several things. In the colon it holds water, adding bulk and softening stools, so it can help in both occasional constipation and looser stools. The bulk gently stretches the bowel wall and triggers normal peristalsis. In the small intestine, the gel slows the rate at which food empties from the stomach and slows the absorption of sugars and fats, and it binds bile acids. This explains why psyllium has been studied for fullness and for healthy blood sugar handling. Bacterial fermentation is modest, so it is less likely to cause wind than some other fibres.

Psyllium is a long-established bulk-forming fibre, and clinical trials support its regularity benefits. Most adults eat less than the recommended fibre intake, around 25 to 30 grams a day in Australia, so psyllium can help fill the gap. Always take it with plenty of water, as dry fibre can swell too soon and cause a blockage.

Common questions

What is psyllium husk?

Psyllium husk is the seed coat of Plantago ovata. It is a natural, soluble fibre that swells in water and supports regularity.

How do you take psyllium husk?

Stir the dose into a full glass of water or juice and drink it straight away, then follow with another glass of water. Never swallow it dry.

When is the best time to take psyllium?

Any time suits, but take it at least an hour apart from other medicines or supplements. Many people take it in the evening or before a meal.

How long does psyllium take to work?

Its effect on regularity usually takes one to three days. Fullness effects come within a meal. Increase the dose gradually.

Can psyllium cause bloating?

A little wind or fullness is common in the first week as your gut adjusts. Starting with a smaller dose and drinking plenty of water helps.

Can I take psyllium every day?

Yes, it is commonly used daily as part of a high-fibre diet, as long as you drink enough fluids.

Safety

Always take with plenty of water, as insufficient fluid may cause choking or bowel blockage. Take at least one hour apart from other medicines, as psyllium can slow their absorption. Seek advice if you have difficulty swallowing, bowel narrowing or severe abdominal pain. Rare allergic reactions can occur, particularly in people who handle powder regularly.
