Spark your cells' natural energy.

Want to feel more switched on? Did you know PQQ is a compound found in tiny amounts in foods like parsley, kiwifruit and fermented soy? It may help support healthy mitochondria and energy.

PQQ gives you 20mg per serving. Each pack has 30 Softgels.

PQQ, or pyrroloquinoline quinone, is a vitamin-like compound found in tiny amounts in foods such as parsley, green peppers, kiwi fruit, natto and human breast milk. It supports your mitochondria, the tiny power stations inside your cells. Researchers are interested in PQQ for healthy energy, focus and cellular ageing. It is often paired with CoQ10, another nutrient that helps mitochondria make energy.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

PQQ is a redox cofactor, meaning it readily accepts and gives up electrons. It is made by bacteria and found in plants and animal tissue, and although no deficiency disease has been defined, animal studies suggest PQQ-free diets reduce growth and mitochondrial number.

Mitochondria. Cell research shows PQQ can activate signalling pathways involving PGC-1alpha, CREB and AMPK. These pathways promote mitochondrial biogenesis, the creation of new mitochondria, and improve how efficiently they work. This is why PQQ is often described as a mitochondrial support nutrient.

Antioxidant action. PQQ is a stable and efficient antioxidant. Its redox cycling lets it neutralise many reactive molecules without being used up quickly, and it may help protect mitochondria from oxidative stress.

Human studies. A small trial of 20 mg per day found improved sleep quality, and another reported improvements in attention and memory in older adults (Nakano et al., Journal of Functional Foods, 2012). These studies are small, so more research is needed.

Absorption. PQQ is absorbed in the gut and peaks in blood within about two hours. It is usually sold as PQQ disodium salt. Doses used in studies range from 10 to 20 mg daily, and it is typically taken with CoQ10 or ubiquinol (Examine.com).

Common questions

What is PQQ?

It is a vitamin-like compound found in foods like parsley and kiwi fruit. It supports mitochondria, the energy-making parts of cells.

What does PQQ do for the body?

It acts as an antioxidant and may encourage the growth of new mitochondria, supporting cellular energy.

What is the difference between PQQ and CoQ10?

CoQ10 helps mitochondria make energy, while PQQ may help create more mitochondria. They are often taken together.

When is the best time to take PQQ?

Take it in the morning or with a meal. Some people prefer not to take it late in the day if it feels energising.

How long does PQQ take to work?

Studies usually run 4 to 12 weeks. Effects are subtle.

Can I get enough PQQ from food?

Food provides only tiny amounts, in the microgram range, so supplements supply much more.

Safety

PQQ is generally well tolerated at label doses, though some people experience headache or mild sleep disturbance. There is limited safety data in pregnancy, breastfeeding and children, so seek advice. Speak to your healthcare professional if you take regular medicines.
