Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is far more than a garden weed. Every part of the plant has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The leaf is a rich source of potassium and vitamins, and has been used in Western herbal medicine as a gentle diuretic. The root is traditionally used to support digestion and healthy liver function, and roasted root makes a popular coffee alternative. Dandelion is enjoyed as tea, tincture and capsule.

The science behind it
Dandelion contains a variety of active compounds. The root is rich in inulin, a prebiotic fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and in bitter sesquiterpene lactones such as taraxacin. Bitter compounds stimulate taste receptors in the mouth and gut, which triggers digestive juices and bile flow. This helps explain dandelion's use as a digestive bitter before meals.
The leaf contains high levels of potassium, along with luteolin, beta-carotene and vitamin K. Its potassium content is thought to explain why it has been called a 'potassium-sparing' diuretic. A small pilot study by Clare and colleagues (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2009) found that people drinking dandelion leaf extract passed more urine over the following five hours, although the study was small and short term.
Root or leaf? The root is traditionally used for digestion and liver support. The leaf is traditionally used for fluid balance and as a mineral-rich food. Many products combine both.
Roasted root. Roasting darkens the root and gives a rich, coffee-like taste without caffeine, though some of the bitter compounds are altered.
Dandelion is part of the daisy family, so people sensitive to ragweed or chrysanthemums may react to it.
