Ancient tree, everyday skincare tradition.
Heard of the village pharmacy tree? Did you know neem has been used in Indian tradition for thousands of years, including in skin and hair care? Explore this time-honoured botanical in your routine.
Neem is a large evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent, often called the village pharmacy because nearly every part of it has been used traditionally. In Ayurveda, its bitter leaves have been taken as a tonic and its oil used on skin and hair. Today, neem appears in capsules, soaps, oils and skin care. It is valued for its bitter taste, its cleansing character and its gentle support of skin health.

The science behind it
Neem (Azadirachta indica) contains an unusually rich mix of plant chemicals. The best-known are limonoids (triterpenoids) such as azadirachtin, nimbin, nimbidin and gedunin, along with flavonoids like quercetin, polyphenols and fatty acids. Azadirachtin is mainly known as a natural insect repellent, which is why neem oil is common in organic gardening.
In laboratory studies, neem leaf extracts have shown antioxidant activity and have affected inflammatory signalling molecules, which is the basis of interest in skin and scalp use. Some compounds also inhibit the growth of certain microbes in the test tube, but these findings do not show that neem treats any condition in people. Human clinical research is limited.
Different parts of the tree are used differently:
- Leaf: used in capsules, teas and powders, with a distinctly bitter taste.
- Seed oil: pressed oil used in soaps, balms and hair oils. It has a strong, garlicky smell. Neem oil is for external use only.
- Bark and twigs: traditionally chewed for oral freshness.
Traditional Ayurvedic texts describe neem as bitter and cooling, used to balance heat and clear the skin. Modern research is still catching up (see Examine.com and NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health). Neem seed oil should never be swallowed.
