Bring back your get-up-and-go.

Feeling flat or low on energy? Did you know your body cannot make vitamin B12 and it is found mostly in animal foods? It may help support energy levels when dietary intake is inadequate.

Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy blood, nerves and energy production. Your body cannot make it, and it is found mainly in animal foods such as meat, fish, eggs and dairy. This is why people eating plant-based diets, older adults and those with reduced stomach acid may fall short. If you have been feeling tired, a B12 supplement can help top up your intake.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a cobalt-containing vitamin that works as a coenzyme in two key reactions. In the first, methylcobalamin helps convert homocysteine to methionine, working alongside folate. In the second, adenosylcobalamin helps convert methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, which is part of energy metabolism from fats and proteins.

Absorption. In food, B12 is bound to protein. Stomach acid and enzymes free it, and it then binds to intrinsic factor, a protein made by the stomach, to be absorbed in the last part of the small intestine. Because this pathway is limited, only a small amount is absorbed from a single dose. However, about 1 percent of a high dose is absorbed by passive diffusion without intrinsic factor, which is why oral supplements work for many people (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Forms. Cyanocobalamin is the most stable and widely studied. Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are the active coenzyme forms, and hydroxocobalamin is a natural form. All are converted to active B12 in the body.

Low intake. The body stores several years' worth of B12 in the liver, so shortfalls develop slowly. Signs can include tiredness, pale skin, tingling in the hands and feet, and a sore tongue.

Common questions

What does vitamin B12 do?

B12 supports energy metabolism, the nervous system and the formation of red blood cells. It also helps process homocysteine.

Which form of B12 is best?

Cyanocobalamin is stable and well studied, while methylcobalamin is the active form. Both raise B12 levels, so choose one that suits your preference.

Who is most likely to need B12?

People following vegan or vegetarian diets, older adults and those with reduced stomach acid. Some medicines can also lower absorption.

When is the best time to take B12?

Many people take it in the morning, since B12 may feel energising. Take it with or without food as per your label.

How long does B12 take to work?

If your levels were low, you may notice more energy within a few weeks. Full replenishment can take a few months.

Can you take too much B12?

B12 is water soluble and excess is generally excreted. Stick to the label and ask your health professional about high doses.

Safety

B12 is generally well tolerated. Speak to your health professional before use if you take metformin, acid-reducing medication or have a history of Leber's eye disease. Ask to have your levels tested if you have persistent tiredness.
