Creamy, deeply comforting moisture for dry skin.
Skin craving serious comfort? Did you know shea butter comes from the nuts of the African shea tree and has been used for centuries as a skin moisturiser? Smooth some on and feel the difference.
Shea butter is a rich, creamy fat from the nuts of the African shea tree. For centuries, women in West Africa have used it to protect and nourish their skin and hair. It melts at body temperature, so it glides on easily and sinks in to leave skin feeling soft and cared for. Unrefined shea retains many natural plant compounds and is a favourite in balms, body butters and soaps.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Shea butter comes from the kernel of Vitellaria paradoxa. It is mostly made up of triglycerides containing oleic and stearic acids, which give it a firm yet melting texture. Stearic acid in particular helps shea feel rich and protective.
The unsaponifiable fraction. Shea has an unusually large portion (up to 10 percent) that does not turn into soap. This includes triterpene alcohols such as lupeol and butyrospermol, plant sterols, tocopherols (vitamin E) and karitene, a natural hydrocarbon. These compounds are thought to give shea its conditioning feel and antioxidant properties.
On skin. Shea works mainly as an emollient and occlusive. It fills spaces between skin cells and forms a light film that slows water loss, helping maintain the skin barrier. A small study in healthy volunteers found shea butter improved skin hydration for several hours after application (published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science).
Refined versus unrefined. Unrefined or raw shea is ivory to yellow with a nutty smell and retains most of its natural plant compounds. Refined shea is odourless and whiter, but some of the unsaponifiable fraction is lost.
Shea is traditionally used across West Africa for skin and hair care.

Many people use it as a rich night cream, especially on dry skin. It can feel heavy for oily or blemish-prone skin.

Does shea butter expire?
Yes, but it keeps well. Store it in a cool place and use within 12 to 24 months.
