Serrapeptase 120, Nutricost, 120 Caps
30,88 AUD
A fascinating enzyme with a quirky origin.
Curious about enzymes? Did you know serrapeptase is a protein-digesting enzyme first isolated from bacteria in the gut of silkworms? It may help support joint comfort and recovery after exercise.
Serrapeptase 120 from Nutricost comes in a pack of 120 Caps.
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme, which means it breaks down proteins. It was first isolated from bacteria living in the gut of silkworms, which use it to dissolve their cocoon. It has been used in parts of Europe and Asia for decades. Supplements are usually made by fermentation and are taken in enteric-coated capsules so the enzyme survives stomach acid. People take serrapeptase for general comfort after minor strain and for easier breathing during seasonal changes.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Serrapeptase (also called serratiopeptidase) is a metalloprotease produced by the bacterium Serratia marcescens E15. It is a zinc-containing enzyme of about 52 kDa. It cuts proteins at specific sites, and it is measured in enzyme activity units (SPU) rather than only in milligrams, so activity matters more than weight.
In laboratory and animal studies, it has been reported to break down inflammatory mediators such as bradykinin, and to reduce the formation of fibrin, a protein involved in clotting and swelling. It also appears to thin and reduce the viscosity of mucus, which may help clear the airways. These effects are the basis of the traditional uses.
Absorption. A major question is how a large enzyme reaches the bloodstream. Animal studies suggest that small amounts may cross the intestinal wall intact, but human data are limited. Stomach acid denatures the enzyme, so enteric-coated capsules that open in the intestine are important. It is usually taken on an empty stomach so food does not compete with it.
Several small trials from the 1990s to 2000s, including studies after dental surgery (Esch et al., Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1989), reported reduced swelling. Modern, large and well-controlled trials are lacking, so the evidence base should be considered preliminary. Examine.com and review articles generally rate it as promising but unproven.

Common questions
What is serrapeptase?
Serrapeptase is a protein-digesting enzyme originally found in silkworm gut bacteria. It is now made by fermentation for use in supplements.
What is serrapeptase used for?
It is used to support comfort after minor injury or exercise, to help support a normal inflammatory response and to support airway comfort.
When is the best time to take serrapeptase?
Take it on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before a meal or two hours after, with a glass of water.
Why does serrapeptase need to be enteric-coated?
Stomach acid can break the enzyme down. An enteric coating protects it until it reaches the intestine.
How long does serrapeptase take to work?
Most people use it for two to four weeks before judging. Studies on post-procedure swelling saw effects within days.
Can I take serrapeptase with other supplements?
It is often combined with bromelain, turmeric or nattokinase. Check with your practitioner if you take other enzymes that affect blood clotting.
Safety
Serrapeptase may have a mild blood-thinning effect, so avoid it if you take warfarin, aspirin or similar medicines unless advised by your healthcare professional, and stop at least two weeks before surgery. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Mild stomach upset, rash or cough can occur. Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder.
