Looking after your body from the inside? Did you know L-lysine is an essential amino acid your body cannot make, so it must come from food? It may help support collagen formation and general wellbeing.
L-Lysine from Nutricost gives you 1000mg per serving. Each pack has 500 Caps.
L-lysine is an essential amino acid, which means your body cannot make it and you must get it from food. It is found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy and legumes. Lysine helps build proteins, supports collagen formation and helps the body absorb calcium. Many people take lysine supplements for skin health, tissue repair and general wellbeing, especially if their diet is low in protein or mostly plant-based.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Lysine is one of nine essential amino acids. It is abundant in animal protein, but low in cereals such as wheat and rice, which makes it the limiting amino acid in many vegetarian diets. Legumes, quinoa and soy provide good amounts.
Collagen. Lysine is needed to build and cross-link collagen. Enzymes called lysyl hydroxylases and lysyl oxidase modify lysine residues in collagen, helping fibres become strong and stable. Vitamin C is also required for this process.
Calcium and carnitine. Lysine may enhance intestinal absorption of calcium and reduce its loss in urine. It is also the starting material for carnitine, which carries fatty acids into mitochondria for energy.
Lysine and arginine. Lysine and arginine are structurally similar and may compete for absorption and transport. The balance between the two amino acids is of interest to researchers, although human findings are mixed.
Absorption. Free-form lysine is taken up through amino acid transporters in the small intestine. Taking it on an empty stomach may improve absorption slightly, away from other protein, but it can also be taken with food (NIH and Examine.com).

When is the best time to take L-lysine?
Many people take it on an empty stomach or between meals, but it can be taken with food if it upsets the stomach.
