Fuel your muscles for the next session.

Pushing hard at the gym? Did you know amino acids are the building blocks of protein and your body needs them to maintain muscle? They may help support recovery and sore muscles after exercise.

Chelated Manganese from Nutricost gives you 8mg per serving. Each pack has 120 Caps.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and your body uses them for almost everything, from repairing muscle to making enzymes and brain chemicals. Nine of them, the essential amino acids, cannot be made by the body and must come from food. Amino acid supplements, including BCAAs and EAAs, are popular with active people, older adults and anyone whose protein intake is low.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Proteins are long chains of 20 amino acids. Nine are essential: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. The body cannot make these, so they must come from diet.

BCAAs. The three branched-chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine, are metabolised mainly in muscle rather than the liver. Leucine acts as a trigger for the mTORC1 pathway, a key signal that switches on muscle protein synthesis.

BCAAs versus EAAs. To actually build new protein, the body needs all of the essential amino acids available at once. BCAAs alone supply only three of the nine, so they can start the process but cannot complete it without the other amino acids from food or supplements. For this reason, complete EAA formulas are generally considered more effective for muscle protein synthesis than BCAAs alone (Wolfe, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2017).

Absorption. Free-form amino acids need no digestion and reach the bloodstream quickly, often in 30 to 60 minutes. Whole protein sources like whey, eggs and meat also supply them, plus extra nutrients.

If you eat enough protein from food, extra amino acids will likely add little. They are most useful when protein intake is low or around training.

Common questions

What are essential amino acids?

They are nine amino acids that your body cannot make. You need to get them from food or supplements.

What is the difference between BCAAs and EAAs?

BCAAs are three of the nine essential amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). EAAs include all nine and provide a complete set.

When is the best time to take amino acids?

Many people take them before, during or after exercise. They can also be taken between meals.

Do I need amino acids if I take protein powder?

Probably not. Protein powder already supplies all the amino acids, so extra aminos add little.

Can I take amino acids on an empty stomach?

Yes, free-form aminos are absorbed quickly. Some people prefer them with food for comfort.

How long do amino acids take to work?

They reach the blood within an hour. Training benefits build over weeks of regular exercise.

Safety

Generally well tolerated at label doses, but high doses may cause stomach upset. Speak to your health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition affecting protein metabolism, or take regular medication.
