The science behind it

Tribulus (fruits, leaves and roots) contains steroidal saponins, mainly protodioscin, along with flavonoids and alkaloids. Protodioscin is the compound most often used to standardise extracts, with some products guaranteeing 40 per cent or more total saponins.

The marketing of tribulus often centres on raising testosterone. Reviews of human studies, however, show that it has generally not raised testosterone in healthy men (Qureshi and colleagues, 2014, and Examine.com summaries). So its benefits, if any, are more likely to come through other pathways. Studies in animals suggest protodioscin may influence nitric oxide in tissues involved in sexual response, and may affect the hormones that regulate libido, but human results are mixed.

Several small randomised trials in men and women have reported improved self-rated desire, but study quality has varied, and not all trials are positive. Athletic performance trials have not consistently found a benefit either.

  • Fruit extracts: the most common in supplements.
  • Whole herb powder: traditional, with lower saponin levels.
  • Standardised saponin extracts: offer a consistent amount of protodioscin.

Tribulus is not a nutrient, so there is no deficiency state. It is best viewed as a traditional herb with modest and variable modern evidence.

Common questions

What is tribulus terrestris?

It is a creeping plant used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as a tonic for vitality, stamina and libido.

Does tribulus boost testosterone?

Most human studies show that it does not raise testosterone in healthy men. Any benefits are likely to be through other pathways.

What is protodioscin?

It is the main saponin in tribulus and is used to standardise extracts. Look for the saponin percentage on the label.

When is the best time to take tribulus?

It is usually taken with food, once or twice daily. Some people take it before training.

How long does tribulus take to work?

Studies generally run for 4 to 12 weeks. Traditional herbs usually need consistent use over several weeks.

Is tribulus the same as the bindii weed?

It is closely related to the plant Australians call caltrop or cat's head, but supplements use specially grown and processed plant material.

Safety

Not suitable for children, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid if you have a hormone-sensitive condition. Tribulus may interact with medicines for blood sugar and blood pressure, and with lithium. Seek advice before use. Tribulus may be restricted for competitive athletes, so check with your sporting body.
