How it works
Oregano oil is a concentrated extract from the leaves of Origanum vulgare, the same herb used in cooking. It is usually sold as a diluted oil in capsules, or as a liquid to be diluted in a carrier oil.
The main active compounds are the phenols carvacrol and thymol, which give oregano its pungent smell and warm, spicy taste. These are volatile oils that are quickly absorbed through the gut lining and skin, and then broken down in the liver. Carvacrol and thymol have been studied in laboratories for antioxidant properties. Because the oil is highly concentrated, it can irritate mucous membranes and skin if used neat. The amount of carvacrol varies by plant variety, growing conditions and extraction method. Oregano has a long culinary and traditional history of use (NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

Common questions
Can I put oregano oil directly on my skin?
No. Oregano oil is very strong and can burn or irritate skin if used undiluted. Always dilute it in a carrier oil and do a patch test first.
Is oregano oil the same as the oregano I cook with?
They come from the same plant, but oregano oil is far more concentrated. A drop of oil can be equal to a large amount of dried herb, so it needs to be used with care.
