How it works
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost only in tea plants (Camellia sinensis) and a few mushrooms. It gives green tea part of its savoury, mellow flavour. Supplements use a purified form made by fermentation or synthesis.
L-theanine is absorbed in the small intestine and crosses the blood-brain barrier using amino acid transporters. Its structure is similar to glutamate, the brain's main excitatory messenger, so it can interact with glutamate receptors in a mild, modulating way. It also appears to raise levels of GABA, serotonin and dopamine slightly, and increases alpha brain wave activity on EEG, a pattern linked with relaxed alertness. Effects are usually noticed within 30 to 60 minutes. When combined with caffeine, as in tea, theanine may smooth the jittery feeling while keeping focus (Nobre et al., 2008, Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition).
What people use it for
- May help promote a sense of relaxation without drowsiness
- May help support calmness and mental focus
- May help support restful sleep quality
- May help support attention and alertness when taken with caffeine
- May help support the body during periods of everyday stress
Common questions
Does L-theanine make you sleepy?
Not typically. It is known for supporting calm and relaxation without sedation, so many people take it during the day as well as in the evening.
Can I take L-theanine with coffee?
Yes, and many people do. The two are often paired because theanine may take the edge off caffeine's jitteriness while still supporting focus.
Safety
Generally well tolerated. Speak to your health professional if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take blood pressure medicines or sedatives, or are taking other supplements that promote relaxation. Not recommended for children unless advised by a health professional.
