How it works
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a compound made in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. Supplements are usually extracted from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia.
In the body, tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP by the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is the rate-limiting step. 5-HTP is then converted to serotonin by an enzyme called aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, which needs vitamin B6. Serotonin is a messenger involved in mood, appetite and sleep, and it is also the starting material for melatonin. Unlike serotonin, 5-HTP is absorbed well from the gut and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Because it bypasses the slow first step, it can raise serotonin production more directly than tryptophan can. This is also why it can interact with medicines that act on serotonin (NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).
