How it works
Magnesium is an essential mineral that your body uses as a helper for more than 300 enzyme reactions. It is needed to make and use ATP, the molecule that carries energy in your cells, and it helps muscles relax after calcium has triggered them to contract. It also plays a part in nerve signalling and in building bone. Most magnesium is absorbed in the small intestine, and absorption falls as the dose rises, which is why smaller, split doses are often gentler. The form matters. Organic forms such as citrate, glycinate and malate are generally better absorbed and kinder on the gut than magnesium oxide, which is high in elemental magnesium but poorly absorbed and more likely to have a laxative effect. Glycinate is often chosen for its gentle action. The kidneys carefully regulate magnesium levels, and diets low in wholegrains, nuts, seeds and leafy greens can leave intakes short (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
What people use it for
- Helps maintain normal muscle function and relaxation
- May help support nervous system function
- Helps relieve muscle cramps and tension when dietary intake is inadequate
- Helps maintain normal energy production
- May help support healthy bone structure
- May help support a sense of calm and relaxation
Common questions
Which form of magnesium is best?
It depends on what you want it for. Glycinate and citrate are well absorbed and usually gentle on the stomach, while oxide is cheaper but absorbed poorly and more likely to loosen the bowels. If you have a sensitive gut, glycinate is a popular starting point.
When is the best time to take magnesium?
Many people take it in the evening because it suits a wind-down routine, but there is no strict rule. Taking it with food can reduce stomach upset. Split doses are often better tolerated than one large dose.
Safety
Too much magnesium can cause loose stools and diarrhoea. People with kidney problems should speak to a healthcare professional first, and magnesium can reduce the absorption of some medicines, including certain antibiotics and thyroid medication, so separate doses by a few hours. Always read the label and use as directed.
