Its leaves, flowers and berries have been used in European herbal medicine since the Middle Ages, and it is often called the herb for the heart. Hawthorn is rich in plant flavonoids that support healthy circulation. It is a gentle, long-term tonic that many people take to support heart health and wellbeing as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The science behind it
The leaves, flowers and berries of Crataegus species contain oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) and flavonoids such as vitexin, hyperoside and rutin. These are the compounds used to standardise most extracts.
Laboratory and animal studies suggest hawthorn has several gentle actions on the cardiovascular system. Its flavonoids may help relax the smooth muscle of blood vessels, partly by supporting nitric oxide release from the vessel lining. This is a proposed way it supports healthy circulation. Hawthorn flavonoids may also influence an enzyme called phosphodiesterase, and help heart muscle cells use calcium efficiently. In addition, they have antioxidant effects that may help protect blood vessel walls from oxidative stress.
Human trials have mostly used standardised leaf and flower extracts, such as WS 1442, in the form of tablets or capsules. A Cochrane review (Guo and colleagues, 2008) found some benefit in measures of exercise tolerance, though the quality of studies varied.
- Leaf and flower extracts: the best studied and most standardised.
- Berry extracts and tinctures: traditional forms, often used in tonics.
- Teas: a milder traditional preparation.
Effects are gradual, and hawthorn is usually taken consistently over weeks. It is not a nutrient, so there is no deficiency state.

It is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to support heart health and healthy circulation.
Which part of hawthorn is used?
The leaves, flowers and berries are all used. Most clinical studies use standardised leaf and flower extracts.
How long does hawthorn take to work?
It is a gentle tonic, so most studies run for 8 to 12 weeks or more. Expect gradual rather than immediate effects.
When is the best time to take hawthorn?
It can be taken with or without food, once or twice daily. Taking it with meals may reduce stomach upset.
Can I take hawthorn with other supplements?
It is often combined with garlic, magnesium or CoQ10 for heart health support. Check with your pharmacist if you take medicines.
Is hawthorn tea as good as capsules?
Tea is gentler and has lower and less consistent amounts. Standardised extracts provide more reliable doses.
