How it works
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant whose root has been used since ancient Greek and Roman times. Supplements use the dried root as a powder, tablet, tincture or tea.
The root contains valerenic acid and related sesquiterpenes, iridoids called valepotriates, and small amounts of the amino acid GABA. Valerenic acid appears to interact with GABA-A receptors in the brain, the same system the body uses for its main calming neurotransmitter, and may also act on serotonin receptors. Together these actions may help explain its relaxing reputation. The smell of valerian is strong and earthy, from volatile oils that form as the root dries. Effects tend to build with regular use rather than being immediate. Clinical results are mixed, so it is best viewed as a gentle traditional herb (NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

Will valerian make me groggy in the morning?
Some people feel a bit slow the next day, especially at higher doses. If that happens, try a lower dose, and avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
