How it works
Iron is an essential mineral and the central part of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to every tissue. It is also part of myoglobin in muscle and of enzymes involved in energy production and DNA synthesis. The body has no easy way to remove excess iron, so absorption is tightly controlled by a hormone called hepcidin. Haem iron from meat and fish is absorbed more readily than non-haem iron from plants and supplements. Non-haem iron absorption is boosted by vitamin C and reduced by tea, coffee, calcium and phytates in wholegrains. Ferrous forms such as ferrous sulfate and fumarate are well absorbed but can upset the stomach, while chelated forms such as iron bisglycinate are often gentler. Needs are higher in menstruating women, pregnancy, and for athletes and vegetarians (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
What people use it for
- Helps relieve iron deficiency when dietary intake is inadequate
- Helps maintain normal red blood cell formation
- Helps reduce tiredness and fatigue due to low iron
- Helps maintain normal oxygen transport in the body
- Helps support normal energy production
- Helps support normal brain function
Common questions
When is the best time to take iron?
Iron absorbs best on an empty stomach, but this can cause nausea for some people. Taking it with a small snack or a vitamin C source is a good compromise. Avoid taking it with tea, coffee, dairy or calcium.
Why does iron cause constipation?
Unabsorbed iron stays in the gut and can slow things down, and it can darken your stools. Gentler forms like iron bisglycinate, a lower dose, taking it every second day, and increasing fluid and fibre can help.
Safety
Iron should only be taken if you need it, as excess iron can be harmful, so have your levels tested first. Keep out of reach of children, as iron overdose is dangerous in young children. Speak to a healthcare professional if you are pregnant or take regular medication.
