Support for mood, energy and balance.

Feeling stressed or run down? Did you know vitamin B6 helps your body make neurotransmitters and process protein? It may help support mood and energy when dietary intake is inadequate.

Max-Amino Caps with Vitamin B6 comes in a pack of 90 Veg Caps.

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that works behind the scenes in your body. It is involved in more than 100 enzyme reactions, particularly the way you use protein and make brain messengers like serotonin and dopamine. It also helps your body make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in your blood. Because your body does not store much, you need a regular supply from foods like fish, poultry, bananas, potatoes and chickpeas. A supplement can help when dietary intake is inadequate.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Vitamin B6 exists in several forms: pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. The active coenzyme form is pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (P5P). Your liver converts the other forms into P5P, which is then used by more than 140 enzymes.

The best-known roles of P5P are in amino acid metabolism, where it helps move nitrogen groups between amino acids (transamination). It is also needed to make neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, GABA and noradrenaline, and to make haem, the iron-containing part of haemoglobin. P5P also helps release glucose stored as glycogen in muscle, and supports the conversion of tryptophan into niacin (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

The recommended dietary intake for Australian adults is about 1.3 mg a day, rising slightly in later life and pregnancy (NHMRC).

Mild deficiency may appear as tiredness, irritability, a sore mouth or cracks at the corners of the lips. Forms in supplements include:

  • Pyridoxine hydrochloride: the most common and stable form.
  • Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (P5P): the active form, which skips the conversion step.

Too much vitamin B6 over a long period can be harmful, causing nerve problems such as tingling in the hands and feet, so stick to the label dose.

Common questions

What does vitamin B6 do?

It helps your body use protein, make energy, form red blood cells and produce brain messengers such as serotonin.

What foods are rich in vitamin B6?

Fish, poultry, potatoes, bananas, chickpeas and fortified cereals are good sources.

What is the difference between pyridoxine and P5P?

Pyridoxine is the common supplement form, which the liver converts into P5P. P5P is the active form, already ready for the body to use.

When is the best time to take vitamin B6?

Most people take it with breakfast or lunch, as B vitamins can be mildly energising. Taking it with food avoids stomach upset.

Can I take too much vitamin B6?

Yes. Long-term high intake can affect nerves, causing tingling or numbness. Do not exceed the label dose and count B6 from all supplements.

How long does vitamin B6 take to work?

If your levels are low, you may feel better in a few weeks. For PMS support, studies usually run for at least 2 to 3 menstrual cycles.

Safety

Excessive intake over a long period can cause nerve damage, so do not exceed the recommended dose, and count B6 from all supplements. Vitamin B6 can interact with some medicines, including levodopa and certain anti-seizure drugs. Seek advice before use in pregnancy and if taking regular medicines. If you notice tingling or numbness, stop and see your doctor.
