Three of the best-absorbed forms of magnesium in one tablet. JS Health Advanced Magnesium+ combines magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate and magnesium amino acid chelate to give you 201 mg of elemental magnesium per tablet (402 mg per daily dose). It's a gentle, vegan formula from a much-loved Australian brand, made to help your muscles relax, support your energy, and fit easily into your evening wind-down.

Why the form of magnesium matters

Not all magnesium is equal. Each supplement pairs magnesium with a "carrier" molecule, and that carrier changes how well it dissolves and how much your body can actually absorb.

  • Magnesium glycinate (bisglycinate): magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. This chelated form is gentle on the stomach and well tolerated. Glycine is itself a calming amino acid that acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and spinal cord.
  • Magnesium citrate: magnesium bound to citric acid. It dissolves readily, and studies show organic forms like citrate are better absorbed than inorganic forms such as magnesium oxide (Walker et al., 2003, Magnesium Research; Lindberg et al., 1990, Journal of the American College of Nutrition).
  • Magnesium amino acid chelate: magnesium bound to amino acids, a well-tolerated form that adds to the total magnesium per tablet.
  • Compared with magnesium oxide: oxide is common in cheap supplements because it packs a lot of magnesium into a small tablet, but it's poorly soluble and only a small fraction is absorbed (Firoz & Graber, 2001, Magnesium Research).

How magnesium works in the body

Magnesium is a cofactor for more than 300 enzyme systems. Your cells' energy molecule, ATP, must be bound to magnesium (as Mg-ATP) to be biologically active, which is why magnesium is essential for normal energy production. In muscle, calcium triggers contraction and magnesium helps muscles relax by regulating calcium movement in and out of muscle cells. In the nervous system, magnesium helps regulate nerve signalling, including NMDA receptors (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Magnesium Fact Sheet).
