Get your spark back when iron runs low.

Feeling tired, flat or foggy? Did you know iron carries oxygen around your body, and many Australians do not get enough? It may help support energy when dietary intake is inadequate.

Iron from 21st Century comes in a pack of 60 Tabs.

Iron is an essential mineral that your body uses to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. It also supports normal energy metabolism and mental function. Women who menstruate, vegetarians and vegans, pregnant women, endurance athletes and growing children often have higher needs. Iron comes from food or supplements, and the form you choose can affect how well you absorb it and how gentle it feels.

Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Heavy periods leading to low iron (Good clinical evidence for iron replacement)
  • Poor concentration (Some clinical studies suggest benefit when iron is low)
  • Plant-based diet shortfalls (Good evidence that iron needs can be higher for vegetarians and vegans)

Suggested to use alongside

  • Vitamin C: Helps absorption
  • Vitamin B12: Works with iron in red blood cell formation
  • Folate: Supports red blood cell production

The science behind it

Iron in the body works as part of haemoglobin and myoglobin, which carry and store oxygen, and in enzymes involved in energy production. When stores run low, tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness and poor concentration can appear (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).

Haem and non-haem iron. Haem iron from meat, poultry and fish is absorbed fairly well, around 15 to 35 per cent. Non-haem iron from plants and supplements is absorbed less, around 2 to 20 per cent, depending on what else is in the meal.

Choosing a form.

  • Ferrous sulfate is the most studied and affordable, but often causes constipation, nausea or stomach discomfort.
  • Iron bisglycinate (also called iron glycinate) is bound to two glycine molecules. It is usually better tolerated, and some studies suggest it is absorbed well at lower doses.
  • Ferrous fumarate and gluconate are other common forms.

What helps or hinders absorption. Vitamin C converts iron to a more absorbable form and boosts uptake of non-haem iron. Tannins in tea, polyphenols in coffee, calcium and phytates in whole grains and legumes can reduce absorption. Leaving about an hour on either side of tea or coffee is a sensible approach.

Your body does not excrete excess iron well, so supplement only when advised. Blood tests, including ferritin, show your actual levels.

Common questions

Which form of iron is best?

Iron bisglycinate is often gentler on the stomach, while ferrous sulfate is the most traditional form. The best choice depends on your tolerance and what your healthcare professional recommends.

Is iron bisglycinate better than ferrous sulfate?

Many people find bisglycinate causes less constipation and nausea. Ferrous sulfate is well studied and effective but more likely to upset the stomach.

Can I take iron with coffee or tea?

It is best not to. Tannins and polyphenols in tea and coffee can reduce iron absorption, so leave at least an hour between them.

Does vitamin C help iron absorption?

Yes. Taking iron with vitamin C, such as a glass of orange juice or a vitamin C capsule, improves absorption of non-haem iron.

When is the best time to take iron?

Iron is absorbed best on an empty stomach, but many people take it with a small snack to reduce stomach upset.

Why does iron cause constipation?

Unabsorbed iron can slow gut movement and change gut contents. Gentler forms, lower doses, fluids and fibre can help.

Safety

Take iron only if you need it, as too much can be harmful. Keep out of reach of children, as iron overdose is a leading cause of poisoning in young children. Speak with your health professional if you are pregnant, take other medicines (including thyroid medication or antacids), or have a condition affecting iron storage.
