HMB 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid is an organic chemical compound from the group of hydroxy acids, methyl derivative of 3-hydroxybutyric acid. It is used in supplements for athletes, especially bodybuilders. Hydroxymethylbutyrate belongs to the group of advanced proteolysis products. It arises naturally as a result of protein catabolism; its precursor is leucine. In principle, all advanced proteolysis products have the ability to inhibit the activity of catabolic enzymes, except that HMB is the most effective of them

HMB is a preparation that performs very diverse functions in our body. Hydroxymethylbutyrate is responsible, among others, for the protection of muscle proteins, increase in muscle mass, increase in muscle strength, as well as a decrease in unnecessary ballast in the form of subcutaneous fat. Thanks to this, we can include it in the group of products with anti-catabolic effects. HMB also leads to an increase in muscle mass and muscle strength. It is worth using this preparation together with creatine, because then the supplement increases its effectiveness.

HMB taken in the amount of 3 g per day for men and 2 g per day for women is able to protect hard-earned muscle mass during the reduction period. These doses should be divided into two or three smaller ones. It is also worth remembering that the time of day is important in HMB supplementation. In the morning and evening, it is recommended to use 0.1 g for every 10 kg of body weight. After training, however, you should take 0.15 g of the preparation for every 10 kg of weight.
