Back your body's own antioxidant defences.
Run down after a big week? Did you know your cells make glutathione themselves from three amino acids, and it is often called the body's master antioxidant? It may help support your natural defences.
Glutathione is often called the body's master antioxidant. Every cell makes it from three amino acids, and it plays a central role in protecting cells from everyday oxidative stress. Levels naturally fall with age, and can be affected by diet, stress and lifestyle. Glutathione supplements, including the reduced and liposomal forms, are popular with people looking to support general antioxidant defences.
Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide made of glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Cysteine is usually the limiting building block, which is why N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and whey protein are also used to support glutathione production.
In cells, glutathione works in a recycling loop. The enzyme glutathione peroxidase uses reduced glutathione (GSH) to neutralise peroxides, forming oxidised glutathione (GSSG). Glutathione reductase then converts it back to GSH using NADPH. The balance of GSH to GSSG is a common marker of cellular oxidative stress.
Glutathione is also used by phase II detoxification enzymes called glutathione S-transferases, which help the body process and eliminate substances from food, medicines and the environment through normal pathways.
Absorption. It was once thought that oral glutathione was broken down in the gut before use. Some more recent trials have shown that regular oral doses can raise blood and tissue glutathione levels, particularly with the reduced form or liposomal delivery (Richie et al., European Journal of Nutrition, 2015). Evidence on outcomes is still developing, and Examine.com rates most claims as preliminary. Dose, form and length of use all differ between studies, which makes results hard to compare.

Common questions
What does glutathione do?
Glutathione helps cells neutralise free radicals and supports the body's natural processing of substances. It is made in every cell.
Can you absorb glutathione from supplements?
Some studies show oral glutathione can raise levels in the blood over several weeks. Liposomal and reduced forms are often chosen for this reason.
What is the best form of glutathione?
Reduced glutathione (GSH) and liposomal glutathione are the most commonly used. Look for a product that states the form clearly.
When is the best time to take glutathione?
Many people take it on an empty stomach, such as first thing in the morning. Follow your product label.
How can I raise glutathione naturally?
Eat sulfur-rich vegetables like broccoli and garlic, get enough protein, sleep well and exercise regularly. NAC and selenium also support its production.
How long does glutathione take to work?
Studies that measured levels usually ran for one to six months. Visible changes, if any, tend to be gradual.
Safety
Speak to your health professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking regular medication. Some people notice mild digestive upset. Discontinue if you notice a rash or other allergic reaction.
