Soap is made when a triglyceride (an oil or fat) reacts with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide in saponification. This produces soap molecules and glycerin. Each soap molecule has a water-loving head and an oil-loving tail. In water, the tails grab onto oil and dirt while the heads face the water, allowing it all to rinse away.

Why pH matters. Skin has a naturally slightly acidic surface of around pH 5 to 5.5, known as the acid mantle. Traditional soap is alkaline, around pH 9 to 10, which can temporarily raise skin pH and leave some people feeling dry. Rinsing well and following with a moisturiser helps. Many body washes are formulated to sit closer to the skin's own pH.

Glycerin. This is a humectant, meaning it attracts water into the outer skin layer. In handmade soap, it is retained naturally. In many commercial bars it is removed and sold separately.

Common oils. Olive oil gives gentle, conditioning lather. Coconut oil produces lots of bubbles and strong cleansing. Shea and cocoa butter add richness and hardness to a bar. Essential oils, clays, oats and honey are added for fragrance, texture and skin feel.

Natural does not always mean gentle. Some people react to essential oils, so choosing a formula that suits your skin type is key.

What is natural soap made from?

Typically plant oils such as olive, coconut or palm, plus an alkali, water and optional extras like essential oils, clays and botanicals. Glycerin forms naturally during the process.

Is natural soap better for your skin?

It depends on your skin. Simple formulas with plant oils and glycerin suit many people, while those with sensitive skin may do better with fragrance-free options. Moisturising afterwards helps.

What is the difference between soap and body wash?

Bar soap is made by saponification and is usually alkaline. Body wash is a liquid cleanser, often made with plant-derived surfactants and balanced closer to skin pH. Both clean well.

Why does my natural soap go soft?

Natural soaps contain glycerin that attracts water. Keep your bar on a draining dish away from the shower spray so it dries between uses and lasts longer.

Can I use natural soap on my face?

Some people do, but facial skin is more delicate. Choose a mild, fragrance-light formula designed for the face and avoid the eye area.

Is natural soap safe for sensitive skin?
