Support your circulation and your workouts.
Want better blood flow during exercise? Did you know L-arginine is an amino acid your body uses to make nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax? It may help support circulation and stamina.
L-arginine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein. Your body makes some of it, and you also get it from meat, fish, dairy, nuts and seeds. Its claim to fame is that it is the raw material for nitric oxide, a gas that helps blood vessels relax and widen. This is why L-arginine is popular with active people and those who want to support healthy circulation, exercise performance and recovery.
Delivery: Ships from overseas. Usually arrives in 1 to 2 weeks.

The science behind it
L-arginine is classed as a conditionally essential amino acid. Healthy adults can make enough, but needs rise with growth, illness, stress or intense activity. Dietary sources include red meat, poultry, fish, dairy, nuts and seeds.
Its most important role is as the substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes. These convert L-arginine into nitric oxide (NO), a signalling molecule that tells the smooth muscle in blood vessel walls to relax. This widens vessels, helping blood flow. Arginine is also involved in the urea cycle, which the body uses to process nitrogen, in creatine production, and in the release of hormones such as growth hormone.
An interesting point is the arginine paradox. Cells usually contain enough arginine to saturate NOS, yet supplementation still seems to raise nitric oxide in some situations. This may be because of competition from an inhibitor called ADMA. Oral L-arginine is also broken down heavily in the gut and liver (by an enzyme called arginase), so only part reaches the bloodstream.
- L-arginine HCl and free-form L-arginine: the most common forms.
- L-citrulline: converts to arginine in the kidneys and may raise blood arginine more reliably.
Evidence for exercise benefits is mixed (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements; Examine.com), so benefits vary between individuals.

Common questions
What does L-arginine do?
It is used by the body to make proteins and nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and supports healthy circulation.
When is the best time to take L-arginine?
Many people take it on an empty stomach, around 30 to 60 minutes before exercise. Other proteins may compete for absorption.
Is L-arginine better than L-citrulline?
Citrulline is converted into arginine and may raise levels more reliably, while arginine acts more quickly. Some products combine both.
How long does L-arginine take to work?
Blood levels peak within an hour, but studies on circulation usually run several weeks.
Can L-arginine cause side effects?
Higher amounts may cause nausea, bloating or loose stools. Splitting the dose can help.
Which foods contain L-arginine?
Turkey, chicken, pork, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, soybeans and dairy are all good sources.
Safety
Not recommended without advice if you take blood pressure medicines, nitrates, blood thinners or medicines for erectile function, as effects can add up. Avoid if you have herpes outbreaks, or after a recent heart event, unless your doctor agrees. Seek advice in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
