Pure aromas to lift any space.

Want to freshen your home or shift your mood? Did you know essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, often needing hundreds of petals or leaves to make a single drop? Diffuse and enjoy.

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic liquids drawn from flowers, leaves, bark, fruit peel and resins, usually by steam distillation or cold pressing. They capture the scent and character of the plant. People use them in diffusers, massage blends and home care for pleasant fragrance and a calming or uplifting atmosphere. Because they are highly concentrated, they should always be used with care and diluted correctly.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

Essential oils are mixtures of small, volatile molecules called terpenes and related compounds. Linalool and linalyl acetate give lavender its floral scent, limonene gives citrus its brightness, and 1,8-cineole gives eucalyptus its fresh, clearing aroma.

When you breathe in an aroma, odour molecules bind to receptors in the nose. These signals travel along the olfactory nerve to the limbic system, the brain region linked with emotion and memory. This is why scent can feel instantly calming or energising. Studies on aromatherapy for relaxation are generally small, and many rely on how people feel, so the evidence is described as modest (Cochrane review on aromatherapy for pain, 2011, found limited data).

Skin application needs care. Essential oils pass through the skin and can irritate it or trigger sensitivity when undiluted. A typical dilution for adults is around one to two per cent, which means about 6 to 12 drops per 30 mL of carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba.

Quality and purity differ widely. Look for oils that list the botanical (Latin) name, plant part and country of origin. Oils oxidise with air and light, so store them in dark glass bottles, tightly capped, away from heat. Citrus oils tend to go off the quickest, usually within one to two years.

Essential oils are for external and aromatic use only, never to be swallowed unless guided by a qualified practitioner.

Common questions

What are essential oils used for?

They are mainly used for fragrance in diffusers, massage blends, baths and home products. People enjoy them for creating a relaxing or uplifting atmosphere.

How do I use essential oils safely?

Dilute them in a carrier oil before they touch your skin, and use them in a well-ventilated room. Do a patch test first.

How many drops should I put in a diffuser?

Follow your diffuser instructions. Three to six drops in a standard unit is common, used in short sessions rather than all day.

Can I put essential oil directly on my skin?

Generally no. Most should be diluted first, as undiluted oils can cause irritation or sensitivity.

Are essential oils safe around pets and children?

Some oils are unsafe for cats, dogs and young children. Keep oils out of reach, ventilate well and ask your vet or pharmacist about specific oils.

How long do essential oils last?

Most keep for about two to three years when stored well. Citrus oils are shorter, around one to two years.

Safety

For external and aromatic use only. Keep away from eyes, children and pets, and do a patch test before use. Take extra care in pregnancy and with sensitive skin, and ask a healthcare professional about specific oils.
