Plant power for everyday immune support.

Fancy more colour on your plate? Did you know quercetin is the natural plant pigment in onions, apples, capers and berries? It may help support healthy immune function, so try it as a daily boost.

Eclectic Institute Nettle gives you 350mg per serving. Each pack has 90 Caps.

Quercetin is a natural plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It is what gives onions, apples, capers and berries some of their colour, and it is one of the most common flavonoids in the human diet. Quercetin is valued for its antioxidant activity and is a popular choice during hay fever season and times of everyday stress on the body. It is often paired with vitamin C or bromelain to help absorption.

The science behind it

Quercetin is a flavonol, a subclass of flavonoids. In food it mostly occurs bound to sugars as glycosides, such as quercetin glucoside in onions. Enzymes and gut bacteria remove the sugar, and the free quercetin is then absorbed and quickly converted in the liver to metabolites that circulate in the blood.

Antioxidant action. Quercetin can donate electrons to neutralise reactive oxygen species. It can also increase the activity of the body's own antioxidant systems by influencing pathways such as Nrf2.

Allergy response. In laboratory studies, quercetin stabilises mast cells, which release histamine when triggered. This is the basis for its use for mild seasonal symptoms. Human evidence is mixed, and Examine.com describes the findings as preliminary.

Absorption. Plain quercetin has low bioavailability because it dissolves poorly in water. Newer forms such as quercetin phytosome, quercetin dihydrate with vitamin C, and enzymatically modified isoquercetin have been developed to improve this. Taking quercetin with a meal containing fat can also help.

Typical dietary intake is around 10 to 30 mg per day, while supplements generally provide much more (NIH-referenced reviews on flavonoids).

Common questions

What is quercetin good for?

Quercetin is a plant antioxidant often used to support healthy responses to seasonal allergens. It is also used for general antioxidant support.

Which foods contain quercetin?

Onions, capers, apples, berries, kale and green tea are good sources. Red onions are especially rich.

Why is quercetin sold with vitamin C or bromelain?

Vitamin C may help recycle quercetin and bromelain may help its uptake. Combinations are common, though evidence is limited.

When should I take quercetin?

Take it with food, since it is better absorbed with some fat. Splitting the dose across the day is common.

How long does quercetin take to work?

For seasonal use, many people start a week or two before pollen season. Effects are gradual.

Can I take quercetin every day?

Short- to medium-term use is common. Follow the label and ask your health professional for longer use.

Safety

Quercetin may interact with some medicines, including blood thinners, certain antibiotics and drugs processed by the liver. Speak to your health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on regular medication.
