Add a little fire to your day.
Fancy a bit of heat? Did you know cayenne gets its fiery kick from capsaicin, which can create a warming sensation? It may help support healthy circulation. Warm things up.
Cayenne is the fiery red pepper that gives many cuisines their heat. That warmth comes from capsaicin, a natural compound that has been valued in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. Cayenne has long been used as a warming digestive herb and as a circulatory stimulant. Today it is a popular supplement ingredient for people who like a gentle, spicy boost to digestion and a feeling of warmth throughout the body.

The science behind it
Capsaicin is the main active compound in cayenne (Capsicum annuum). It binds to a receptor called TRPV1, a heat and pain sensor found on sensory nerve endings. Activating TRPV1 creates the familiar burning sensation, a rise in skin temperature and reflex sweating.
In the digestive tract, capsaicin can stimulate saliva, gastric secretions and gut motility. In larger amounts it may irritate the stomach lining, which is why many people prefer capsules taken with food. Capsaicin may also trigger a small, short-lived rise in heat production and energy use called thermogenesis, although effects are modest.
Circulation. TRPV1 activation prompts release of signalling molecules such as nitric oxide and calcitonin gene-related peptide, which relax blood vessels. This is thought to underlie the traditional use of cayenne as a circulatory stimulant.
Heat units. Cayenne strength is described in Scoville heat units. Extracts and powders vary widely, so standardisation to capsaicinoid content gives more consistent results. Capsaicin is absorbed in the upper small intestine and metabolised quickly by the liver (Examine.com).
With regular use, the TRPV1 receptors become less sensitive, which is why people who eat chilli often tolerate more heat.

Common questions
What is cayenne used for in supplements?
It is traditionally used as a warming herb to support digestion and healthy circulation. The active compound is capsaicin.
Does cayenne really boost metabolism?
Capsaicin can cause a small, temporary rise in energy expenditure. The effect is modest and best viewed as a gentle support alongside a balanced diet.
Can I take cayenne on an empty stomach?
It is best taken with food or a full glass of water. On an empty stomach it may cause burning or discomfort.
Why does cayenne cause a warm or flushed feeling?
Capsaicin activates heat-sensing nerves and widens small blood vessels in the skin. The sensation is normal and passes.
How long does cayenne take to work?
Warming and digestive effects are usually noticed within an hour. Longer-term benefits are less well studied.
Are capsules better than cayenne powder in food?
Capsules deliver a measured amount and avoid the burn in the mouth. Using the spice in cooking is also a lovely way to enjoy it.
Safety
Cayenne may cause heartburn, stomach upset or a burning sensation in some people. Avoid if you are allergic to capsicum, and take care if you use blood-thinning or blood pressure medicines or have a sensitive stomach. Seek advice before use in pregnancy, breastfeeding or in children.
