Probiotics are live micro-organisms often referred to as friendly bacteria or good bacteria, which are similar to the usual members of normal human microflora communities, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.

Probiotics help to restore and replenish the good, natural bacteria in the digestive system and reduce the growth of harmful organisms.

Stress, alcohol consumption, certain medications and eating poorly can throw out your gut’s balance of good versus bad bacteria and may lead to dysbiosis (a change in the microflora).

Probiotics help to restore balance of good bacteria to help support general health.

Having a balance of the good gut bacteria also helps to support digestive health, women’s health, and immune system and bowel health.

Blackmores Probiotics+ are a range of fridge free probiotics based on scientific evidence containing clinically trialled probiotic strains.

The products help keep your gut healthy and running smoothly and are developed using a specialised formulation process and packaging technology to keep the good bacteria alive.

Blackmores Probiotics+ range uses measures in the manufacturing process and packaging that ensures the preservation of the probiotics without the need to refrigerate, so they are delivered in the digestive system alive where they are required.

Whilst it is well known that high temperatures can affect the viability of probiotics, moisture is as big a threat to their survival.

The Blackmores Probiotics+ range is shelf stable because we use a sophisticated formulation process and packaging techniques to help prevent moisture from harming the good bacteria. Because our probiotics contain such low levels of moisture, heat isn’t such a worry and you don’t need to store them in the fridge.

How it works

Probiotics are live microorganisms, most often Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, that may provide a benefit when taken in adequate amounts. Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, and these friendly species help break down fibre, make short-chain fatty acids that feed the cells lining the bowel, and compete with less helpful microbes for space and nutrients. They also communicate with the gut's immune tissue and nerve network. Effects are strain-specific, which means a benefit shown for one named strain cannot be assumed for another. Probiotics generally do not settle permanently in the gut. They pass through while you take them, so regular use is needed to keep their presence up. Survival through stomach acid depends on the strain and the capsule or delivery system. Prebiotic fibres, such as inulin, feed beneficial bacteria and are sometimes combined with probiotics (World Health Organization and FAO definition of probiotics).

What people use it for

  • May help support healthy digestive function
  • May help maintain a healthy balance of gut flora
  • May help support regular bowel habits
  • Helps maintain intestinal health when taken regularly
  • May help support gut comfort after a course of antibiotics, as directed by your healthcare professional
  • May help support the body's natural immune function

Common questions

When is the best time to take a probiotic?

It depends on the product, so follow the label. Many are taken with or just before a meal, because food can help buffer stomach acid. Consistency matters more than the exact time.

How long does it take for probiotics to work?

Some people notice a change within a week or two, while others need a month or more. Because they do not stay in the gut permanently, they work best when taken daily as part of a diet rich in fibre and varied plant foods.

Safety

Mild gas or bloating can occur in the first few days. People who are severely unwell or have a weakened immune system should speak to a healthcare professional before use. If you take antibiotics, separate the doses by a couple of hours.
