Love a wildflower with a secret? Did you know evening primrose opens its pale yellow blooms at dusk, and oil from its seeds is rich in GLA? It may help support hormonal balance and skin health.
Evening Primrose Oil ~ ~2026 !!! from Blackmores comes in a pack of 190 Caps.
Evening primrose is a wildflower whose pale yellow blooms open at dusk. Oil pressed from its tiny seeds is one of the richest plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid that the body uses to make hormone-like messengers. Evening primrose oil has a long history in Western herbal medicine and has been popular for decades, especially among women, for supporting skin comfort and monthly wellbeing.

The science behind it
Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) is about 70 per cent linoleic acid and 8 to 10 per cent gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Normally the body converts linoleic acid to GLA using an enzyme called delta-6-desaturase. This step can be slow, and it may be reduced by ageing, stress, alcohol, high sugar intake and some nutrient shortfalls. Supplying GLA directly bypasses that step.
GLA is rapidly lengthened to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). DGLA is then used to make series-1 prostaglandins, such as PGE1, which are involved in the body's normal inflammatory balance and in the regulation of smooth muscle and skin barrier function. Because GLA is built into cell membranes, it may help the skin hold water, which is one reason it is studied for dry skin.
For premenstrual symptoms, one theory is that some women are unusually sensitive to normal fluctuations in prolactin, and that PGE1 may modulate this effect. Clinical results have been mixed, and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes the evidence for many uses is limited. Healthy dietary sources of GLA are rare, with borage oil and blackcurrant seed oil the main alternatives.
Look for cold-pressed oil with added vitamin E to protect against oxidation.

Common questions
What is evening primrose oil used for?
It is traditionally used to support women's wellbeing, particularly premenstrual symptoms, and to help maintain skin comfort. It supplies GLA, an omega-6 fatty acid.
What is GLA?
GLA stands for gamma-linolenic acid. It is an omega-6 fatty acid your body converts into compounds that help regulate normal inflammatory balance and skin function.
When is the best time to take evening primrose oil?
Take it with a meal, as fats are absorbed better with food. Many people split the dose between breakfast and dinner.
How long does evening primrose oil take to work?
Give it at least three months. Studies on skin and cycle-related symptoms generally run for twelve weeks or longer before changes are assessed.
Is evening primrose oil good for skin?
It may help support skin moisture and barrier function from within. Results vary, and it works best with a good moisturiser, sun protection and a balanced diet.
Can I take evening primrose oil every day?
It is generally used daily for several months. Review with your healthcare professional if you plan to take it longer than that.
