How it works
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a shrub whose root has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, where it is classed as a rasayana, or rejuvenating herb. Its main active compounds are withanolides, steroid-like molecules that include withaferin A and withanolide D. In research, these compounds appear to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system that controls the body's stress response, and are associated with lower cortisol levels. Ashwagandha also influences GABA receptors, which may explain its calming and sleep-supporting traditional use. Extracts are usually standardised to a percentage of withanolides, and root-only extracts such as KSM-66 and Sensoril are among the most studied. Absorption is helped by taking it with food. Because extracts vary widely, check that the product is standardised and carefully labelled (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012, Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine).

Common questions
How long does ashwagandha take to work?
Most studies run for 6 to 12 weeks, so it is best to take it daily for at least a month. It works gradually rather than like a sedative, and results vary.
Should I take ashwagandha in the morning or at night?
It depends on how it affects you. Some people feel calm and take it at night for sleep, while others prefer morning or split doses. Start with the label dose and adjust the timing to suit you.
Safety
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ashwagandha may affect thyroid hormone levels and may interact with sedatives, thyroid, blood sugar and immunosuppressant medicines, so speak to a healthcare professional first. Stop use and seek advice if you notice signs of liver upset such as dark urine or yellowing of the skin.
