How it works
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic liquids, usually collected from plants by steam distillation or cold pressing. They are made up of small, volatile molecules such as terpenes and esters, which is why they evaporate quickly and smell so strong. A single bottle can hold the aromatic essence of a large amount of plant material.
In aromatherapy, the scent molecules reach receptors in the nose that connect to the olfactory bulb and then to the limbic system, the part of the brain linked with mood and memory. This is why scent can feel calming or uplifting. When applied to skin, essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil, as undiluted oil can irritate. Small molecules can pass through the skin surface, but most evaporate first.
A common guide for adults is about 1 to 2 per cent dilution for general skin use, which is roughly 5 to 10 drops per 30 mL of carrier oil. Essential oils are used for their fragrance and for cosmetic purposes.
What people use it for
- Provides a natural fragrance to help create a relaxing atmosphere when diffused.
- Adds a pleasant scent to massage oils, bath products and homemade cosmetics.
- Traditionally used in aromatherapy to help create a calm or uplifting mood.
- Can be blended with a carrier oil for a scented body massage.
- Freshens the air in rooms when used in a diffuser.
Common questions
How much essential oil should I use in a carrier oil?
For most adults, a 1 to 2 per cent dilution is a sensible starting point, which is about 5 to 10 drops in 30 mL of carrier oil. Use less for the face, for sensitive skin and for older adults. Always do a patch test first.
Can I put essential oil straight on my skin?
It is best not to. Undiluted oils can cause redness or irritation, and sensitivity can build up with repeated use. Mixing with a plant-based carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba keeps things gentle.
Safety
Do not swallow essential oils. Always dilute before applying to skin, avoid eyes and mucous membranes, and keep away from children and pets. Seek advice before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have sensitive skin.
