Cool, fresh comfort after every meal.

Feeling bloated or heavy after a meal? Did you know peppermint contains menthol, the compound behind its cooling freshness? It may help support digestive comfort. Enjoy it as a refreshing daily ritual.

Peppermint is a cool, refreshing herb, a natural cross between watermint and spearmint. Its leaves are full of aromatic oils, the most famous being menthol, which gives that cooling sensation. Peppermint has been enjoyed as tea, oil and lozenge for thousands of years, from ancient Egypt to modern kitchens. It is a much-loved remedy for after-dinner comfort, fresh breath, and clear, easy breathing.

The science behind it

The main active compound in peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is menthol, which makes up around 30 to 55 per cent of the essential oil, along with menthone and menthyl acetate. Menthol activates TRPM8, a cold-sensing receptor in skin and mucous membranes, producing the familiar cooling feeling without actually lowering temperature. It also blocks calcium channels in smooth muscle.

In the digestive tract, this smooth muscle relaxing action is thought to ease spasm and help trapped gas move along. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules release their contents in the intestine rather than the stomach, which reduces the chance of heartburn. Clinical trials and meta-analyses have found peppermint oil can ease abdominal discomfort (see Examine.com and the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

Forms differ:

  • Tea: a mild infusion of the leaf, rich in flavonoids such as rosmarinic acid and with some volatile oils. Cover while steeping to keep the oils in.
  • Enteric-coated oil capsules: deliver concentrated oil to the intestine.
  • Essential oil: for aromatherapy or diluted topical use only.
  • Fresh or dried leaf: used in cooking and tea.

Inhaled menthol makes airflow feel clearer by stimulating cold receptors in the nose, even though it does not physically open nasal passages. Topically, diluted peppermint oil has been studied for tension-type headache, with a cooling effect on the skin.

Common questions

What is peppermint good for?

Peppermint is traditionally used for digestive comfort, fresh breath and a clear, cool feeling when you are stuffy. It is also used topically for tired muscles.

Does peppermint tea help with bloating?

Many people find a warm cup after meals comforting for bloating and wind. The studies are mostly on peppermint oil, but tea has a long traditional use.

Can I take peppermint on an empty stomach?

Tea is gentle, but oil capsules are usually taken before meals as directed. Enteric coated capsules help reduce reflux.

Is peppermint oil safe to use on skin?

Always dilute it in a carrier oil and patch test. Avoid the face of babies and young children.

Can I drink peppermint tea every day?

Yes, a few cups a day is common. Some people with reflux find it makes heartburn worse.

What is the difference between peppermint and spearmint?

Peppermint has more menthol and a stronger, cooler taste. Spearmint is milder and sweeter.

Safety

Peppermint can worsen heartburn or reflux in some people. Do not apply oil to the face of infants or young children, and keep essential oil away from eyes. Speak to a health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take medicines for reflux or those processed by the liver.
