Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) is a small, creeping herb with fan-shaped leaves that grows in wetlands across Asia. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is known as a brain tonic, and in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also celebrated in modern skincare as 'cica', or tiger grass. Gotu kola is taken as tea, capsule and tincture, and applied in creams for skin comfort.

The science behind it
The main active compounds in gotu kola are triterpenoid saponins, called centelloids. These include asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. Many products are standardised to a set percentage of these.
Skin and connective tissue. Laboratory work shows that asiaticoside and related compounds stimulate fibroblasts, the cells that make collagen, and may help skin repair. This is the basis for its popularity in topical skincare and for traditional use on minor wounds.
Circulation. A standardised extract known as TTFCA (total triterpenic fraction of Centella asiatica) has been studied in people with tired, heavy legs, and some trials, such as one reported by Cesarone and colleagues (Angiology, 2001), found improved comfort and circulation markers.
Brain and calm. In animal studies, gotu kola appears to protect nerve cells and promote dendritic growth. A small study in healthy older adults (Tiwari and colleagues, 2008) reported improvements in working memory. A small trial of the startle response (Bradwejn and colleagues, Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, 2000) suggested a calming effect.
The herb is not related to the kola nut and does not contain caffeine. Effects usually build over several weeks of regular use.
