Ginseng is a slow-growing root that has been valued in Asia and North America for thousands of years. Panax ginseng, also called Korean or Asian ginseng, is the classic energising root of traditional Chinese medicine. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is considered gentler and more cooling. Both are classed as adaptogens, herbs traditionally used to help the body cope with physical and mental demands. They are popular for energy, focus and general vitality.

The science behind it
The active compounds in ginseng are called ginsenosides, a family of saponins with more than 100 identified types. Different ginsenosides appear to have different effects. Rb1 is associated with calming effects, while Rg1 is more stimulating, which helps explain ginseng's reputation as a balancing adaptogen.
How it may work. Ginsenosides appear to influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the body's stress response system, as well as antioxidant pathways and nitric oxide production, which affects blood flow. Some are converted by gut bacteria into smaller, more active compounds, so absorption varies from person to person (Examine.com).
Panax vs American. Panax ginseng has a higher proportion of Rg1 and is traditionally considered warming and energising. American ginseng has more Rb1 and is considered milder. Clinical work on American ginseng, including a Canadian study of a standardised extract (CVT-E002), has looked at seasonal wellbeing.
Red vs white. White ginseng is air dried. Red ginseng is steamed then dried, which changes the ginsenoside profile and is said to give a stronger effect.
Eleuthero. Often called Siberian ginseng, it is a different plant and does not contain ginsenosides.
Ginseng is usually taken in the morning for several weeks and often in cycles.

Common questions
What is the difference between Korean and American ginseng?
Korean (Panax) ginseng is traditionally warming and stimulating, while American ginseng is milder and more cooling. Both contain ginsenosides, but in different ratios.
When is the best time to take ginseng?
Morning or early afternoon is best, as ginseng can feel stimulating and may interfere with sleep if taken late.
How long does ginseng take to work?
Some people notice a difference within a few days, but most studies run four to twelve weeks.
Can I take ginseng with coffee?
Many people do, but both can be stimulating. If you feel jittery or restless, reduce one or the other.
What is red ginseng?
It is Panax ginseng that has been steamed before drying. The process changes its ginsenosides and gives it a darker colour and a more warming profile.
Can I take ginseng every day?
Many people take it daily, often for several weeks followed by a break. Follow the label and check with a healthcare professional if you take regular medicines.
Safety
Ginseng may interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, diabetes medicines, and stimulants. Speak to your healthcare professional before use if you take medicines, and avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some people experience sleeplessness, restlessness or headaches.
