Ayurvedic focus for busy minds.

Mind feeling foggy or scattered? Did you know brahmi, also called bacopa, has been used in Ayurvedic tradition for centuries as a brain tonic? It may help support memory and mental clarity.

Brahmi, also known as Bacopa monnieri, is a creeping herb that grows in wet areas of India and Australia. In Ayurvedic medicine it has been taken for centuries as a brain tonic, and it is traditionally used by students and scholars to support memorisation. Today it is a popular herb for people who want to support memory, learning and mental clarity. Bacopa is usually taken as a standardised extract and works gradually, with effects building over a couple of months.

Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

The science behind it

The main active compounds in Bacopa are triterpenoid saponins called bacosides, especially bacoside A and B. Quality extracts are standardised to a percentage of bacosides, often 20 to 55 per cent.

Laboratory and animal research suggests bacosides may support communication between nerve cells. They appear to influence the cholinergic system, which uses the neurotransmitter acetylcholine involved in learning and memory, and to help protect nerve cells from oxidative stress. Some research also points to effects on serotonin and on proteins that support the growth of new nerve connections.

In humans, a number of trials, summarised in a 2014 meta-analysis (Pase and colleagues, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine; and a 2016 review by Kongkeaw and colleagues), suggest that Bacopa taken for 12 weeks can improve certain measures of memory, particularly the speed of recalling new information. It did not clearly change everything. Effects are not immediate. Bacosides are fat-soluble, so Bacopa is best taken with food, ideally a meal containing some fat.

  • Choose a standardised extract.
  • Give it at least 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Some people notice mild stomach upset at first, which usually eases with food.

Common questions

What is brahmi used for?

It is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to support memory, learning and mental clarity. It is also used to help with stress.

Is brahmi the same as bacopa?

Yes, in most supplements. Brahmi usually refers to Bacopa monnieri. In India, the name is sometimes also used for Centella asiatica, so check the Latin name.

How long does brahmi take to work?

Most trials show effects after 8 to 12 weeks of regular use. It is not a quick-fix herb.

When should I take brahmi?

With food, as the active compounds are fat-soluble. Many people take it with breakfast, because it can feel mildly stimulating or calming depending on the person.

Does brahmi make you sleepy?

Some people feel calm or slightly drowsy, others feel alert. If it makes you sleepy, take it in the evening.

Can I take brahmi every day?

It is commonly used daily for several months in studies. Speak to a healthcare professional about long-term use.

Safety

Can cause stomach upset, loose stools or nausea, especially on an empty stomach. Speak to your healthcare professional before use if you take thyroid, sedative or anticholinergic medicines, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
