Acetyl L-Carnitine Alpha Lipoic, 750mg, 120 Caps
31,45 AUD
Fuel your active lifestyle.
Want more from your workouts? Did you know your body makes L-carnitine to help move fatty acids into cells where they are used for energy? It may help support energy and exercise performance.
Acetyl L-Carnitine Alpha Lipoic gives you 750mg per serving. Each pack has 120 Caps.
L-carnitine is a nutrient your body makes from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and also gets from foods such as red meat and dairy. Its main job is to carry fats into the energy-making parts of your cells, called mitochondria, so they can be burned for fuel. People take it to support energy, exercise performance and recovery. Vegetarians and vegans may have lower intakes. Supplements come in several forms, including L-carnitine tartrate, acetyl-L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine.
Delivery: Usually arrives within 3 days to 2 weeks.

Benefits & common uses
Benefits
- Helps support the body's natural energy production from fats
- May help support exercise performance and recovery
- Helps reduce tiredness and fatigue when intake is inadequate
- May help support muscle function
- Helps maintain normal fat metabolism
- May help support mental alertness (acetyl-L-carnitine)
What people commonly use it for
- Tiredness and low energy (Some clinical studies suggest benefit, especially where dietary intake is low)
- Muscle soreness after exercise (Some clinical studies suggest L-carnitine tartrate may help recovery)
- Exercise stamina (Some clinical studies suggest benefit, mostly at higher doses over several weeks)
- Low intake on a plant-based diet (Good evidence that levels are lower. Supplements can raise them)
- Mental fatigue (Early research for acetyl-L-carnitine)
Suggested to use alongside
- CoQ10: Nutrient involved in cellular energy
- B complex: Supports normal energy metabolism
- Creatine: Popular sports supplement
The science behind it
Fats are a major fuel, but long-chain fatty acids cannot enter mitochondria on their own. L-carnitine bonds to them, forming acylcarnitines, and the carnitine shuttle carries them across the inner mitochondrial membrane, where they are burned to make ATP. Carnitine also helps remove excess acyl groups from the cell. About 95 per cent of the body's carnitine is stored in muscle, including the heart.
Healthy people make enough in the liver and kidneys, but the body also draws on diet. Absorption from food is about 55 to 85 per cent, while from supplements it is far lower, at around 14 to 18 per cent.
Forms and why they differ
- L-carnitine (base) and fumarate: general-purpose forms.
- L-carnitine L-tartrate (LCLT): quickly absorbed and the form most often used in exercise research.
- Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR): crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily, so is chosen for mental energy and focus.
- Propionyl-L-carnitine: studied for circulation and blood flow.
Carnitine uptake into muscle is slow and is helped by insulin, so some research pairs it with carbohydrates. Benefits usually take weeks to months of regular use. See the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements carnitine fact sheet for details. Note that results for body composition are modest.

Common questions
What does L-carnitine do?
It helps move fats into your cells' energy factories so they can be used for fuel. It is found in muscle, and supplements are popular with active people.
What is the difference between L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine?
L-carnitine mainly supports muscle and energy metabolism. Acetyl-L-carnitine crosses into the brain more easily, so it is chosen for mental energy and focus.
When is the best time to take L-carnitine?
Many people take it with a meal or around exercise. Carbohydrates may help muscles take it up. Acetyl-L-carnitine is often taken in the morning.
How long does L-carnitine take to work?
Muscle levels rise slowly, so most studies run for at least 8 to 24 weeks.
Do vegetarians need L-carnitine?
Vegetarians and vegans get little from diet, though the body makes some. A supplement can help top up levels.
Does L-carnitine cause a fishy smell?
High doses can cause a fishy body odour, nausea or stomach upset in some people. Lowering the dose usually settles it.
Safety
Speak to your healthcare professional before use if you take blood thinning medicines, have a seizure history, an underactive thyroid or are on dialysis. High doses may cause nausea, loose stools or a fishy odour. Not for use in pregnancy without advice.
