Sharpen your focus with an ancient tree.
Struggling to concentrate or keep your thoughts sharp? Did you know the ginkgo tree has survived on Earth for over 200 million years? Its leaves may help support memory and mental clarity.
Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract comes in a pack of 200 Caps.
Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest living tree species on Earth, often called a living fossil. Its fan-shaped leaves have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and are now one of the most widely used herbal extracts in the world. Ginkgo is best known for supporting healthy circulation, particularly to the brain and extremities. People use it for mental clarity, occasional forgetfulness and cold hands and feet. Supplements use a standardised leaf extract.

The science behind it
Ginkgo leaf extract contains two main groups of active compounds. Flavonoid glycosides (such as quercetin and kaempferol) are antioxidants, and terpene lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalide) influence blood vessels and nerve cells. The best known standardised extract, EGb 761, is made to contain around 24 per cent flavonoid glycosides and 6 per cent terpene lactones. A much-studied trial extract is the basis of most research.
Ginkgolide B blocks platelet activating factor, which affects how readily blood cells clump. Ginkgo may also help relax small blood vessels and improve blood flow in tiny capillaries, while bilobalide shows protective effects on nerve cells in laboratory studies. These actions form the rationale for its use for circulation and memory.
Evidence in people is mixed. Some trials in older adults report improvements in thinking and everyday function. The large GEM trial (DeKosky and colleagues, 2008, JAMA) in older adults found that ginkgo did not change the rate of memory decline, so benefits for healthy people should be viewed realistically.
- Choose a standardised leaf extract, not raw leaf.
- Seed and raw leaf contain ginkgolic acids, which are limited in quality extracts.
- Effects may take 6 to 12 weeks.
