How it works

Black seed (Nigella sativa), also called black cumin, is a small black seed used in Middle Eastern, South Asian and North African traditions. It is sold as whole seed, powder, capsules and cold-pressed oil.

The oil's best-known compound is thymoquinone, a volatile quinone found in small amounts alongside fatty acids such as linoleic acid, plus plant sterols and tocopherols. Thymoquinone is fat-soluble and is absorbed more readily when taken with a meal containing some fat. It is thought to act as an antioxidant, helping to neutralise reactive oxygen molecules, and it has been studied for effects on inflammatory signalling pathways in cell and animal work. The amount of thymoquinone varies a lot between oils, depending on the seed, pressing method and storage, because light and heat degrade it. Human studies are generally small, so findings should be viewed cautiously. Black seed has a long history of traditional use (NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).

What people use it for
