HOW TO GROW

CHIA PLANT

Step 1

Fill 3 inch diameter seedling containers with potting mix

and water the soil until it is moistened but

not soaked.

Step 2

Sow 2 Chia seeds in each prepared container. Press the seeds

lightly onto the soil surface, and then cover them with a 0.5 cm

deep layer of moist soil. Cover the containers with a plastic

bag and set them in a 20-25°C/70-75°F location.

Germination takes approximately 2 weeks.

Step 3

Remove the plastic bag when the Chia sprouts above the soil,

and move the plants to a sunny window or to a sunny location

outside. Water as the soil surface dries, water at the base and

avoid watering it's foliage.

Step 4

Once strong enough to be transplanted they will need

a full sun position in the garden or a larger pot. Wait to do

this until after the last frosts have passed. Soil

must be well draining - add propagation sand if needed

to increase drainage.

Space between plants should be 18-24 inches to

allow plants to grow in width.

From sowing to harvest is generally around 4-6 months.

Harvest Chia seeds for culinary use after the flowers

wilt and the seed heads dry.

just the skin and hair benefits.

Chia also helps with heart health, blood sugar levels, boosts

energy levels, aids with muscle and tissue regeneration, has

fatty acids and high quality proteins. It also promotes brain function,

assists with bone and digestive health and assists with

The plant was widely cultivated and given as tribute in 21 of the

38 Aztec provincial states. Economic historians suggest that it was

a staple food that was used as widely as orn.

The seeds can be made into a gelatin like substance or consumed raw.

The gel from ground seeds may be used to replace the egg content in cakes

while providing other nutrients, and is a common substitute in

vegan baking!
