The Sugarbaby Watermelon lives up to its name. It is sweet to eat and smaller than
other common watermelons; growing to approximately 15-20cm (6-8 inches).
The other fantastic thing about this particular variety is that it has a considerably
shorter maturity time in comparison to other watermelons.
This variety can be grown in most climates but thrives best in Mediterranean zones.
Start anytime of the year in tropical areas, Spring to mid Summer in sub-tropical areas,
Spring to early Summer in temperate zones and mid Spring-early Summer in cooler regions.
Temperate & Cooler regions may need to keep soil warm by using black plastic or mulch
over the top of soil for optimal germination & growth.
In warmer areas Watermelon can be sown directly into the garden, in cooler areas it is best to
start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before it is time to plant outdoors - a heat mat may be
needed during this period if you have very cold winters to keep the soil at least 20°C.
Sow seeds approximately 2 cm deep in rich, well draining soil, spacing them
between 60-80 cm apart (unless pre warm weather growing & transplanting). They will grow
along the ground, however trellising will help avoid disease & allow better air circulation.
Watermelons are not drought tolerant, keep soil moist but not wet/soggy. Over watering can
take away some of the sweet flavour from your crop
Harvest time: 75-85 days (when stems turn brown)
